Maps
Fourth graders had a visit from Jeff
Bennett, who discussed maps and geographic
features of New York State.

Monday, October 1
Henry Hudson's Halfmoon
Fourth graders went to the Corning
Preserve in Albany to get a "First Mate's"
look at a replica of Henry Hudson's ship,
the Halfmoon. The children toured the
visitors' center and saw a film about
Hudson's famous voyage and
ship.

A Good Book
Finding a good book in second grade can
take some work.

Wednesday, October 3
Buffalo Days
Fourth graders spent time in a Native
American tipi. They learned how western
Native Americans' lives differed from our
eastern Native Americans. They saw and
touched artifacts from a distant
past.

Thursday, October 4
"Students of the Month"
September 2001
Students from third, fourth and fifth
grade classrooms were honored as "Students
of the Month" for their efforts during
Courtesy Month.
Kindergarten, first and second grade
classes recognized students in their
classrooms.

Tuesday, October 9
Fire Prevention Week
October 7-13 is "National Fire
Prevention Week". Volunteers from local
fire stations visit schools and teach the
children about fire safety. These children
are viewing a demonstration about the
potential hazard of gas fumes. We thank
these volunteers who keep our community
safe and help the children learn valuable
safety lessons.

Wednesday, October 10
A Tasty State
Studying the landforms of New York
State can be a tasty experience! Fourth
graders baked and decorated giant cookies
in the shape of our Empire
State.

Thursday, October 11
Cursive Writing
Cursive writing in third grade requires
concentration. Good posture, comfortable
seating and a sharp pencil help in the
formation of the cursive
letters.

Dressing up for school pictures is
required :)

Tuesday, October 16
An Apple Festival
Ms. Debus' & Mrs. Arnett's multiage
classes celebrated their month long "Apple
Festival" by making New York States'
official muffin - the apple muffin! Parent
volunteers helped the children make the
batter and the muffins were baked in the
cafeteria's ovens. The verdict?
YUM!!!

Kindergartners had a "Funny Feet
Parade" to show off their creative
footware.

Letters of Support
As part of a statewide program to
support victims' families, police and fire
workers and the men and women clearing the
rubble in Manhattan, children are sending
letters of support. This letter by a first
grader is one of many created and sent
during the week.
